fusiliers were considered elite troops and were all issued bearskins, except for light companies.the fusiliers hair was worn in a braided queue which was kept of the back of the jacket by black ribbon attached to the collar.the queue was later abolished in 1808 although the 23rd kept the black ribbon as a traditional distinction.fusiliers regiments also contained light infantry and grenadiers.light infantry wore a cap bearing the regimental badge, and this had a black roach.on campaign this was frequently replaced by black felt round or slouch hats.
